Shanghai CPPCC member Han Yifan focuses on key sectors and continuously offers suggestions

On 30 April, Chairman Xi attended a symposium on strengthening basic research in Shanghai and delivered an important speech. In recent days, members of the Shanghai Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) have been earnestly studying and comprehending the spirit of Chairman Xi’s important speech. They have expressed their commitment to focusing on key areas such as the development of Shanghai’s Pilot Zone for Basic Research and the construction of the Shanghai (Yangtze River Delta) International Science and Technology Innovation Centre, and to putting forward more constructive policy recommendations. Yi-Fan Han, a member representing East China University of Science and Technology, noted that the current tendency to prioritise publications and projects above all else persists. Original research involving trial and error poses risks for young scholars, and doctoral students are often reluctant to engage in such research, which makes it difficult to publish papers in the short term. This situation has adversely affected senior scholars who are committed to original and influential work. Furthermore, research institutions prioritise competing for projects and talent whilst neglecting talent development, and fail to assume responsibility for research outcomes commensurate with the resources they receive. The members therefore proposed that as institutions secure more project and talent resources, they should bear greater responsibility for research output; that is, the ‘cost’ of utilising social resources should be taken into account in evaluations, thereby better incentivising researchers to make full use of limited social resources. Prof. Yi-Fan Han_Appl. Catal. B | Size-dependent evolution of active-sites on Co3O4-modified In2O3 catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to methanol

CO2 hydrogenation to methanol can alleviate the energy crisis and reduce the environmental pressure caused by excessive CO2 emissions, making it an important reaction of great interest. In addition to traditional copper-based catalysts, Co-modified In2O3 catalysts have shown excellent catalytic performance and research potential for this reaction. However, Co species tend to form complex structures under redox conditions, and In2O3 itself is reducible, leading to ongoing debates in the academic community regarding the nature of the active structures in Co-modified In2O3 catalysts. In the Co-modified In2O3 system, the impact of Co species nanoparticle size on the evolution of surface structures under working conditions, the formation of active sites, and the transformation of intermediates during methanol synthesis has not yet been systematically studied—this constitutes the central focus of the present work. This study reveals for the first time that Co3O4 nanoparticle size is the key factor controlling the dynamic interfacial evolution and active site formation of Co/In2O3 catalysts under operating conditions. It is clarified that low-content, highly dispersed Co3O4 reconstructs into Co single-atom–Ov–Co° active sites, whereas high-content, large-sized Co3O4 diffuses into the In2O3 bulk phase to form CoIn alloy active sites. It is further demonstrated that both types of active sites efficiently catalyze CO2 hydrogenation to methanol via the HCOO* pathway, achieving a CO2 conversion of 16.7% and a methanol yield of 1.13 g·gcat-1·h-1—performance superior to most reported In2O3-based catalysts. Professor Yi-Fan Han/Weifeng Tu_ACS Catal | CO2 Hydrogenation over Co/In2O3 Catalysts to Produce Methanol

In response to the global demand for CO2 reduction and resource utilisation, hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol represents a highly promising conversion pathway. Its core challenge lies in developing highly efficient and stable catalysts. In2O3, possessing excellent methanol selectivity, is regarded as a potential catalyst for this reaction. However, its catalytic activity falls short of practical application requirements due to its limited ability to activate both H2 and CO2. Non-precious metal cobalt, owing to its cost advantage and strong electronic interaction with In2O3, emerges as an ideal promoter. However, existing research lacks clear understanding of the dynamic evolution of Co species during the reaction and their correlation with catalytic performance, posing significant challenges in identifying and regulating active sites. This study elucidates a gas-atmosphere-induced structural evolution mechanism: it demonstrates that H2 pretreatment synergistically promotes Co3O4 rearrangement with the reaction environment, forming highly dispersed Co single atoms and metallic Co°. It clarifies synergistic active site interactions: confirming that synergistic sites composed of Co single atoms and metallic Co° enhance H2 dissociation and CO2 adsorption activation capabilities. The prepared Co/In2O3 catalyst exhibits high methanol selectivity (75.1%), conversion rate, and stability, providing a novel strategy for developing efficient non-precious metal-based CO2 hydrogenation catalysts. NEW FINDING: Nanostructure of Indium-driven nickel catalysts break CO2 hydrogenation preference

This work has been systematically investigated to explore the mechanism of regulation of carbon dioxide hydrogenation products by nickel-indium alloys. The unique structural and electronic interactions between nickel and indium are elucidated through comprehensive characterisation and theoretical calculations. With hydrogen reduction, nickel-indium alloys are generated at the nickel crystal surface, building a core-shell structure. Nickel-mediated methanogenesis is almost completely suppressed, and the reaction pathway shifts from methanation to inverse water gas reaction. At the contact surface, indium restricts CO adsorption on nickel, thus preventing the generation of methane from CO via sequential hydrogenation.DFT calculations confirm that nickel and CO are negatively charged and mutually repulsive due to electron transfer from indium, leading to a decrease in CO adsorption energy, which is critical for pathway conversion. A detailed understanding of the moderating role of nickel-indium structure in product distribution is expected to provide valuable insights for the precise design of catalysts with controlled product selectivity. Dynamic in-situ (Operando) spectroscopy is a technological tool used to study materials' surface structure, reaction kinetics and catalytic mechanism under real working conditions to reveal reaction mechanisms, evaluate catalytic performance and shorten the design and development cycle of new materials. According to the concept of “reasonable design and controllable preparation” of industrial catalysts, we focus on (1) Creating new strategies for the regulation of industrial catalyst structure assisted by in-situ spectroscopy (Operando) technology to study a real reaction process; (2) Explaining the relationship of structure-activity of the active sites throughout the catalyst lifecycle (preparation-structure, structure-activity-product, deactivation-regeneration). (3) Acquiring the synergistic regulation mechanisms for the process of preparation-activation-reaction-transfer in catalysts; (4) finally, greatly improving the efficiency of research and development for the industrial catalysts. We have developed a new generation of Operando spectroscopy (reaction cell up to 50 bar). The combination of kinetics, DFT, and operando spectroscopy allows us to build the relationship of structure-performance for the catalysts. The project aims to develop efficient nanocatalysts that build on the atomic-level information obtained from our mechanism studies.

Prof. Minghui Zhu's latest Nature Catalysis:Induced activation of the commercial Cu/ZnO/ Al2O3 catalyst for the steam reforming of methanol

In summary, we propose a catalyst activation method, referred to as induced activation, to control the surface reconstruction process by tuning the composition of reducing agents. Exposing the commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst to a H2/H2O/CH3OH/N2 mixture during activation accelerates the migration of ZnOx species onto the surface of metallic Cu nanoparticles. Furthermore, a proper degree of encapsulation can be achieved by tuning the exposure time, improving both the catalyst stability and activity. The activity enhancement relates to the abundant Cu–ZnOx interfacial sites that exhibit faster kinetics for the *CH3O dehydrogenation and H2O dissociation. This study represents a conceptual advance to not only create an active phase but also modify the active surface sites at the atomic level during catalyst activation. Compared to designing catalytic materials with new compositions or synthesis protocols, optimizing the activation procedures is an additional alternative to yield more reactive and stable active sites that potentially enable broader industrial applications.highlights
