The study on the design and structure regulation of high efficiency oxidation catalyst was awarded the first prize of 2021 Natural science of Henan Province.

Based on dynamic in-situ Operando spectroscopy, this project revealed the mechanism of continuously generating catalyst active centers in the process of multiphase oxidation reaction, and established the active center structure regulation of high-performance oxidation reaction catalyst and the theory of controlled generation of reactive oxygen species. A new method to study the dynamic structure of oxidation catalyst was established. The formation mechanism and regulation mechanism of active center of oxidation catalyst were revealed. The regulation technology of reactive oxygen species for oxidation catalyst in industrial reactor has been broken through.

Prof. Minghui Zhu's latest Nature Catalysis:Induced activation of the commercial Cu/ZnO/ Al2O3 catalyst for the steam reforming of methanol

In summary, we propose a catalyst activation method, referred to as induced activation, to control the surface reconstruction process by tuning the composition of reducing agents. Exposing the commercial Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 catalyst to a H2/H2O/CH3OH/N2 mixture during activation accelerates the migration of ZnOx species onto the surface of metallic Cu nanoparticles. Furthermore, a proper degree of encapsulation can be achieved by tuning the exposure time, improving both the catalyst stability and activity. The activity enhancement relates to the abundant Cu–ZnOx interfacial sites that exhibit faster kinetics for the *CH3O dehydrogenation and H2O dissociation. This study represents a conceptual advance to not only create an active phase but also modify the active surface sites at the atomic level during catalyst activation. Compared to designing catalytic materials with new compositions or synthesis protocols, optimizing the activation procedures is an additional alternative to yield more reactive and stable active sites that potentially enable broader industrial applications.highlights
